On 21 March 2018, the Mistress Environmental Cleaner Mrs Carol Broadley welcomed Shrieval Consorts Emma Redcliffe and Fiona Adler and 31 fellow Livery Mistresses and Consorts to Nomura International PLC’s award-winning City of London HQ for a Tour and Afternoon Tea. Guided by Ms Nina Swallow, Mr Terry Jones and Mr David Crowley from the company’s Facilities Management team, the group spent a fascinating hour or so touring the facilities and learning about the company’s approach to staff and environmental wellbeing.

Nomura is an Asia-based financial services group with an integrated global network spanning over 30 countries and a commitment to contributing to social development in all its operational locations. Its London HQ is a shining example of how careful building design and operation can enhance the health and wellbeing of its occupants whilst reducing waste, conserving energy and natural resources, promoting biodiversity, reducing carbon emissions and maximising waste management and recycling.

This includes collecting and cleaning rain and ‘grey’ water from sinks and showers for flushing toilets, water-cooling the trading desks, growing flowers, fruit and vegetables on the terrace for in-house catering and sale to staff, and managing bee hives on the roof. Staff are even encouraged to take home used coffee grounds from the restaurant for composting – and some of the Consorts did too!

The building covers 546,000 square feet over 11 floors, with space for over 1800 traders on two state of the art trading floors. It also has a staff gymnasium, medical centre, broadcast studio, 220-seat auditorium, multi-faith facility and a large staff restaurant. Its 20,000 square feet river side terrace is the largest roof terrace in the City of London.

Apart from seeing all this in action and enjoying a delicious afternoon tea, the consorts also raised £600 for Nomura’s charity of the year Whizz Kidz, and £600 for the Worshipful Company of Environmental Cleaners Charitable Trust.

Consort Environmental Cleaner Elect, Mr Alec Marden, says he is already looking forward to organising another tour next year!
