John C Shonfeld

Early Life

I was born in York 17th November 1945, moved to Nottingham where I was educated at Nottingham Bluecoat School and Trent University, obtaining a Diploma in Management studies, as well as a Teaching certificate.

First Experience

I worked in the laundry industry in various positions from Trainee Manager in Manchester and Sheffield to General Manager in Lincoln and Portsmouth, and with various PLC’s including Rentokil Initial and Sunlight Service Group. I was manager of St John’s hospital laundry in Lincoln serving 22 Hospitals, for 7.5 years. Growing the operation from serving one hospital to covering the majority of Hospitals in Lincolnshire, using cutting edge technology for production, and the first operation to introduce a bonus system based on productivity.
I covered various aspects of production management, chemistry, accounts, purchasing, sales and transport services.

My Own Boss

I started Tibard Ltd in 1979 from the fourth bedroom of our home with my wife Sue, and over the last 40 years we have grown in size, now employing over 150 people. From two sites in Tameside we grew a laundry and garment manufacturing and rental operation with nationwide coverage. We also export to the Middle East, Asia, Europe China and the Mediterranean, and a fast growing market in the Caribbean.
We have grown both organically and by acquisition to around 18.5 Million. The company now has a non family Managing director and Finance Director and I’m the Chairman of the Group.

Directorships and other Interests

I am a director of a number of property companies, past director of the Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce, I am also past President of the Tameside Chamber, The Textile Services Association where I am a member of their commercial board, and President of the National Laundry Group which I started.
I am a Freeman of the City of London , a past Master of the Worshipful Company of Launderers,.and Master of the Worshipful Company of Environmental Cleaners for the year 2020-21.

I am past Chairman of the sector skills council for the Laundry and Dry-cleaning Industry for Skillfast, of which I was a board member, During that time I was instrumental in starting the delivery of NVQ’s to the Laundry industry including the devising , approval, and delivery of their qualification as well as overseeing the awarding body,. To date over 13000 launderers have received their qualification. I served for the last 10 years as a member of Tameside Council district assembly for Dukinfield as a business advisor.

Home Life

I have been married to Sue for the last 49 years and have twin boys and four grandchildren. My interests are: Motor Racing, Skiing, and Shooting. I am chairman of Marple Rifle and Pistol club. I am a bell ringer at All Saints Church in Marple.
I am a historian and collector with specific interest in outstanding characters.
